Cordulegaster picta versus insignis

In Turkey two species of Cordulegaster can be found. Cordulegaster picta (left) (close relative of the European C. boltonii) and C. insignis (right) (close relative of the European C. bidentata). The latter species has five subspecies (see checklist)

Generally spoken both species can be recognized by the colour of the eyes: green in C. picta and blue in C. insignis insignis.

But this character is not always true: in juvenile Cordulegaster picta it can be greyish (left) and in Cordulegaster insignis mzymtae (right) (one of the insignis subspecies occurring in North-eastern Turkey) the eyes are green.
